Would adding some alfalfa pellets help my horse’s topline? He gets good hay and a balancer now, LMF Super Sup. G
Hello Gloria – Great question. In general no, they won’t help topline much. Alfalfa pellets are higher in protein and amino acid than grass hay, but lower than a quality formulated balancer like our Empower Topline Balance. Furthermore, alfalfa pellets typically run 16% crude protein, which is on the lower end of the quality scale for alfalfa pellets, which is why it is in a pellet and not a bale. We use alfalfa pellets as an ingredient in many feeds, but not for a protein or amino acid source — rather as a very digestible fiber source. An easier solution would be to evaluate your balancer and consider feeding more of it. Hope that helps – please let us know if you have more questions!
